September 2023. This means it has been 18 years since I incorporated Durant Consulting, Inc. in 2005. I only remembered this anniversary because I got a LinkedIn message from a connection that simply said, “Congrats on your work anniversary”. Not much pomp and circumstance for what I consider to be an enormous achievement. I must admit, I’m proud as hell that I’ve been on my own for so long.
I have another admission… I get jealous when I see posts of promotions, new jobs with fancy titles, and accolades for outstanding work. I don’t get quarterly reviews. I often don’t get thanked for the work I do. I certainly don’t win any awards. I’ll never be a Managing Director or SVP. Then I remind myself that I AM MY OWN BOSS (and I sure do give myself raises and bonuses). My title hasn’t changed in 18 years, but I have morphed the scope of my company over time and have had an amazing roster of clients throughout the years. I’ve been hired year after year by the Top Festivals in the USA -17 years with the South Beach Wine & Food Festival, 15 with NYC Wine & Food Festival and 9 with Life is Beautiful. They get the accolades and I know that I’m a small part of what makes that happen.
For all the other small business owners, entrepreneurs, solopreneurs and freelance gig workers out there successfully making it on your own – I congratulate you! I applaud you! I’m popping a bottle of champagne and cheering your accomplishment. And I say, “Congrats on your work anniversary”.
